<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">It's that time again! Today I'd like to share another of the Major Arcana cards with you: </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>The Emperor </i>- 10" x 16.5" Oil on watercolor paper.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</span>This guy was lots of fun as I always enjoy creating humanoid creatures that are part human with other animal features. The Emperor here is depicted as a version of Cernunnos, or "The Horned God" in Celtic Paganism. I can't go much more into explanations on the other symbolism as I don't want to go against or assume what the author has in mind, but I think everything works really well together in this one. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This one didn't require too much preliminary sketching because the description given to me by the author, Melanie Marquis, provided a pretty clear mental image for what I want the final to look like. Here's a thumbnail I created for approval: </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSPbG7H4yCvfqGfZsalriQ69cHBLcOdoL7NqU8ZU7Ehkn8Fst_9l02RbZOgy2KL14AqKm0pn2Z39v1KY1ZKuXxdB6K6tGaQgsMMMfpLoh5xfqJE9ZlWxOREqP1ngp25JI-9XPSYLlePPoW/s1600/The+Emperor+thumb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSPbG7H4yCvfqGfZsalriQ69cHBLcOdoL7NqU8ZU7Ehkn8Fst_9l02RbZOgy2KL14AqKm0pn2Z39v1KY1ZKuXxdB6K6tGaQgsMMMfpLoh5xfqJE9ZlWxOREqP1ngp25JI-9XPSYLlePPoW/s1600/The+Emperor+thumb.jpg" height="400" width="242" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Digital</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Once the thumbnail was given the OK I went ahead with photos and created the charcoal sketch: </span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikYLRB2aj6o5f0fzgwtVAq79Wq_TPo9heoGE31OFhZiYF86Y_bzAxERcbeac6MOHmKLBbWp5QmzXTbYlBo4OrC7kNNhn_F3C4b-MrMyHgmGc0GNRCOh3NVWEx2kiG8FlVbPxpj9ZMeEyTj/s1600/The+Emperor+Sketch+Small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikYLRB2aj6o5f0fzgwtVAq79Wq_TPo9heoGE31OFhZiYF86Y_bzAxERcbeac6MOHmKLBbWp5QmzXTbYlBo4OrC7kNNhn_F3C4b-MrMyHgmGc0GNRCOh3NVWEx2kiG8FlVbPxpj9ZMeEyTj/s1600/The+Emperor+Sketch+Small.jpg" height="640" width="388" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">10" x 16.5" Charcoal and digital.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you compare the sketch with the final, I decided to shrink his head a little as it got slightly on the large side in the sketch. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That's all for today! Next week's post may be delayed, as I will be travelling and might not have internet access, but never fear! I'll post as soon as I can soon after. Thanks for stopping by!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Maybe I should start calling these Tarot Wednesday since I've been good about forgetting to post on actual tuesdays.... Oh well! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today, I present to you the Knight of Swords:</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> I really like all of the knights cards from this deck because they are all riding interesting animals. As you can see with my previous post with the Knight of Cups <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-year-new-post.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I love horses, but who doesn't want to paint a guy riding on a charging bull? </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For this one, I did a couple thumbnails to try to determine which route to go with the illustration: </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first thumbnail was a bit pulled back with a more heroic pose, and the second option is based on the original Rider-Waite design seen above with the knight charging across the image. The writer and I decided to go with the second image and I was off to sketch. Due to time constraints I decided to do the sketch digitally: </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I like to do most of the sketching and final work with the card template visible so that I can keep in mind the final crop and text placement for the printed version of the cards. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here we are yet again at another Tuesday...time flies!</span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I'd like to share a larger version of the Ten of Cups card. I had previously posted it <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-year-new-post.html" target="_blank">here</a> as a smaller version amongst the rest of the cups cards, but I thought it might be nice to show it larger so you can see details a little better.</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_vapKRClNT7lqpxS3Kq5ueVs5_NPLEyNfmpjy7Y7OgaG5CC8FPS1kuCpdDzUMSwGphegV2L_c0-B5rNJGH1Y-_d8UbKyhG9kv-7YA-lJpGv3e1PMcTc6ZlqbjJHJ-T7hmvczCKL_vQnXF/s1600/10+of+Cups+Final+Small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_vapKRClNT7lqpxS3Kq5ueVs5_NPLEyNfmpjy7Y7OgaG5CC8FPS1kuCpdDzUMSwGphegV2L_c0-B5rNJGH1Y-_d8UbKyhG9kv-7YA-lJpGv3e1PMcTc6ZlqbjJHJ-T7hmvczCKL_vQnXF/s1600/10+of+Cups+Final+Small.png" height="640" width="384" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">10 of Cups - Digital.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> This is one of a few digitally painted cards that I've created for the deck. I've chosen to complete some of the cards digitally as opposed to painting simply because of time and size restraints. This painting would have taken me a lot longer, and I would have had to paint it much bigger than some of my other ones because of the multiple figures</span>, <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and the many cups involved in the piece. Not to mention, the time it would have taken to properly paint and glaze the rainbow to make it look the way it should. Sadly, there's just not enough time to spend weeks on one of these illustrations. But despite those things, I'm fairly happy with how this one turned out. I've been learning a lot about digital painting over the few that I've completed digitally so far...I still feel like I'm doing it all wrong, but my mind works more as a physical painter than a manipulator of images</span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">like some of the digital painting videos I've watched seem to look like. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyway, thanks for looking and following along! See you next week!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, only three weeks in, and I'm already off my schedule with Tarot Tuesday! As usual, things have been crazy around the studio and I got sidetracked away from my post yesterday. But, better late than never I suppose...(Though, I hate being late.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today's painting is one of my favorites from the deck thus far:</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCESy9myuxz9G7Cck3jW9KJMuqoRZvd0Fzov6ZHv72xR38IY_9HX6TYxRQhptPlhyGt28X4cQ7obM2bdMzM9292FMbZewMc5iAicqIK_1pClgZHTuDfPuL4jGLnQ1lBuXAYoC5wKH_VckO/s1600/The+Hermit+Final+Small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCESy9myuxz9G7Cck3jW9KJMuqoRZvd0Fzov6ZHv72xR38IY_9HX6TYxRQhptPlhyGt28X4cQ7obM2bdMzM9292FMbZewMc5iAicqIK_1pClgZHTuDfPuL4jGLnQ1lBuXAYoC5wKH_VckO/s1600/The+Hermit+Final+Small.png" height="640" width="388" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>The Hermit</i> - 10" x 16.25" - Oil on watercolor paper.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Hermit is one of the first of the Major Arcana paintings that I've completed for the deck. He is one of 22 Major Arcana cards that will appear in the Modern Spellcaster's Tarot. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I really enjoyed this guy because the card description was on the simpler side so I could focus more on the mood and character in the piece. Plus cloaked and bearded old guys are pretty high on my list of "always fun things to paint."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That's all for today! Until next time, have a nice week! </span></div>

So you really can't go wrong. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I haven't been given the actual text for the accompanying book that will be available with this deck, so I'm not entirely sure what all of the symbolism means, but I do know that the deck intends to follow the general Rider-Waite format. </span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A quick post for today, but I wanted to start off a new blog series that I should have began a long time ago. So it's with this I will kick off "Tarot Tuesdays." I'll be posting a new painting for the upcoming <i>Modern Spellcater's Tarot </i>deck written by Melanie Marquis and being published by <a href="http://www.llewellyn.com/" target="_blank">Llewellyn Worldwide</a> later this year each Tuesday until I reach the end of the project</span>. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've already posted some work from the deck in previous posts <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-year-new-post.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-modern-spellcasters-tarot-judgement.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So today I present the Ace of Swords</span>:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1KxsqhVUWGVM3H6t1bzxwyIjuXIjx1V9i70KsMDRyegddobQpeZ58RhOBxdEcaHf7uBcZy5vinjHLgLfpuGMP8QNNsjiw66i4t5hh1lkEOkCKnQFuBM-fnFeTY-FuBLKGDV2wrjALLql/s1600/Ace+of+Swords+Final+Small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1KxsqhVUWGVM3H6t1bzxwyIjuXIjx1V9i70KsMDRyegddobQpeZ58RhOBxdEcaHf7uBcZy5vinjHLgLfpuGMP8QNNsjiw66i4t5hh1lkEOkCKnQFuBM-fnFeTY-FuBLKGDV2wrjALLql/s1600/Ace+of+Swords+Final+Small.png" height="640" width="379" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">7" x 11.5" Oil on watercolor paper.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The suit of swords contains some of my favorite images from the deck so far, so expect plenty more of those as we roll along with Tarot Tuesday. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I'm happy to share some new Magic art that was just released! It's like my birthday whenever I get the chance to share new art for MTG because they literally sit in my flat files for almost a year unseen by anyone except myself until that fateful day when I can reveal them to the world. It's especially hard when it's a piece that you are really proud of at the time, because sadly, by the time the illustration comes out I'm usually not crazy proud of it anymore.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I still like this guy though: </span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivxgRAq3WKEEuS-rscRwJjSl_dWDQukfGCQzfm2Wo0eK7aQNNCvNzLvN8fPOy7-5uKtLoVgTrHzHtD_wLkYhgvvOCQDyMqYrIlpLHyZAgtBTPdBx-9YKwuIA8VUNw-bP-5osy0zH7C0iWz/s1600/160089_AbzanBeastkeeper_FinalSmallColoradjust+copy.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivxgRAq3WKEEuS-rscRwJjSl_dWDQukfGCQzfm2Wo0eK7aQNNCvNzLvN8fPOy7-5uKtLoVgTrHzHtD_wLkYhgvvOCQDyMqYrIlpLHyZAgtBTPdBx-9YKwuIA8VUNw-bP-5osy0zH7C0iWz/s1600/160089_AbzanBeastkeeper_FinalSmallColoradjust+copy.png" height="470" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Abzan Beastmaster - 15" x 20" Oil on masonite. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This assignment was a little unique for me as it is an alternate art promo card that will be given out to winning players that participate in the Friday Night Magic tournaments held this upcoming May. It's unique because the art description called for me to create an illustration that was similar to, as in it had the same art description:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">ART DESCRIPTION:<br />
Setting: FATE REFORGED KHANAR<br />
Clan: <span class="il">Abzan</span><br />
Color: Green creature<br />Location: Out on the plains of Khanar, a scrubby grassland/desert</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Action: This is an alternative take on a male ainok beastmaster. He is
shepherding his collection of huge beasts across the plain (see notes).<br />
The ainok appears to be standing among some tall tree trunks, which are
actually the legs of giant beasts. The ainok has a magical staff.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This card needs a different composition from the original.<br />
Focus: The Ainok beastmaster.<br />
Mood: Wise. Such a small dude wields power over such giant beasts.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But it had to be different from an image that was already created for the standard card. It's especially tricky when the reference art that already exists is super good. Here's the great standard version of the card that I was given to differentiate from by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/winona.nelson.art" target="_blank">Winona Nelson</a>:</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoIteGxX1Iy_VfdMKFbdiEX0Ut4EdjV3no_FsnU8lKoYLX30W1iy0Rqkg801HeG8SrYm_lNBy5ArRGWYpwy5HzhZt52PTFHp35ldeV9ug_goRw5CPck2nCHwXb5MbXAVVkbnBHlZEGwiUd/s1600/10925460_925255880831532_8821119936517378716_o.jpg" height="301" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I love the lighting that she used in this piece.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I enjoyed the challenge though, and tried my best to make my own version focusing on his connection with the giant creatures and playing up the "standing among tall tree trunks" feel for the legs of the beasts.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Since the description was pretty straightforward I was mostly focusing on lighting and how close or far away to show the beastmaster. We decided to go with the first one as it seemed a "best of both worlds" between showing him closer up or more in the distance. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I'm happy to share a new painting I did for Fantasy Flight Games recently. I'm always excited when I get asked to create work for Star Wars as it's one of those universes that just has so much cool stuff to depict, and I've been a fan of the movies ever since I was young. So when I was asked if I could do a spread illustration of Darth Maul for an upcoming RPG book published by Fantasy Flight Games, I jumped at the opportunity. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Normally I like to paint all of my finished work in oils, but this project came in at time where I was very busy and getting ready to move as well. I also knew that this painting required the character to be on a separate layer from the background. Not to mention that since the work is Licensed under Lucas Film...I wouldn't really be able to do anything with an original painting anyway. So I decided to complete the piece entirely digitally. Actually, this serves as the first published digital piece for me. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As always, I created multiple "thumbnail" sketches for the art director to choose from. Since the job called for Darth Maul to stand against a black background, I was able to just focus on his pose and how it would fit within the page layout: </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After a few suggestions from the art director, we decided to go with option #3 and I began my sketch phase:</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTzd5Ns8YUKVbZiSoXFqGA9zxJzaJSZ5i-rOgyvvPEsTiC_HiF4nWqGiVKY_Wp87_l83Jgu0LzniIKVfuSs0CbVf7ZY6JMT7k3KgyXOLowVxFvcCuGZ5CAPR_s-lVriG6BrSaJ3vy4gToG/s1600/Darth+Maul+Chapterplate+Final+Sketch+Small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTzd5Ns8YUKVbZiSoXFqGA9zxJzaJSZ5i-rOgyvvPEsTiC_HiF4nWqGiVKY_Wp87_l83Jgu0LzniIKVfuSs0CbVf7ZY6JMT7k3KgyXOLowVxFvcCuGZ5CAPR_s-lVriG6BrSaJ3vy4gToG/s1600/Darth+Maul+Chapterplate+Final+Sketch+Small.png" height="408" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Normally I would have done this in charcoal, but since the end product was going to be digital, I decided to just complete it in Photoshop so that it would be easier to go ahead and start coloring it without taking the time to scan and fix a traditional drawing. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I feel like it should be easier to color a grayscale image in Photoshop...and I'm sure that it is, but I'm also pretty stubborn and never feel like reading or watching demo videos of digital painting to figure it out. So I pretty much paint digitally the way that I do traditionally...or as close as I can approximate it. Though, it's not nearly as fun as pushing real paint around. If only I could get a single digital brush and paint to react the way they do in person. Well, I guess that's what'll keep me always turning to traditional medium... </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In any case, I did enjoy creating this guy very much despite my digital wrestling. It also taught me a lot about painting in photoshop that I never really dealt with when only using it to create quick sketches and rough color studies before. So in the end, I'm happy with how he turned out:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As I mentioned last week in my <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-year-new-post.html" target="_blank">tarot post,</a></span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">some new Magic work was on the way. Well, here we are a week later, and I'm happy to be able to stay true to my word. Today all of the final card images were released for the new Fate Reforged set in the Tarkir block of Magic: The Gathering. I'm happy that one of my new cards was in this group, as sometimes it's hard to tell where my illustrations will fall. Here it is: </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello there dear followers</span>,<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once again I've managed to let this blog get coated in a nice thick layer of dust. My apologies for that...Often I find myself so enthralled in trying to stay on track with my work, that I don't want to spend the time to write up blog posts. I'm a terribly slow writer, so it takes me quite a while to put something together, no matter how small it is. But! Here we are in a new year yet again, so with that, I will do my best to post more regularly. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So what have I been up to lately?? Well, lot's of things, but mostly working away on the <i>Modern Spellcaster's Tarot </i>that I made a <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-modern-spellcasters-tarot-judgement.html" target="_blank">post about back in April.</a></span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This project is huge, and I think I underestimated the challenge it would be especially on top of finishing graduate school, getting married, moving to a different state, and now holidays that have just passed. However, I am making good headway now that I have a good stretch of time ahead of me without any significant interruptions. So onward I battle! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have completed all of the Cups cards in the deck, and I put together a little image showing the whole group:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's another set of characters that was recently released for the Japanese game I've been working on "Rage of Bahamut." <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was really excited this past weekend when I was told that the new Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook would be released at Gencon. Because that meant I could show a painting I created for it: </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This painting was a bit unique for me because due to a bit a scheduling mix-up I only had about a week to paint it, and on top of that it contains the most people I've ever painted in a scene ever. So the challenge was on. But in such a crunch I'm really happy with how it turned out and enjoyed the challenge of composing an image with so much going on. Actually, I was in such a rush I even did the entire preliminary sketch digitally, which I think was a first for me: </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've finally managed to get home and somewhat settled after returning from Gencon this past weekend. As usual, I had a blast meeting fans, signing cards, drawing a million sketches, selling art, and hanging out with many of my artist pals that I only get to see at conventions. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think this year I ended up drawing as many sketches in one weekend as I had over the previous three Gencons combined! It was lots of fun, although pretty exhausting. Here's a few of my Magic artist proof sketches that I did for customers and managed to remember to take photos of...there was way more than just these.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's a new painting that was recently released for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion Roleplaying Game's Core Rulebook. It's always nice to jump into a more sci-fi setting for a change so I really enjoyed my chance to work on this project. The image called for a painting of a scout on watch duty as the other soldiers set up camp on a jungle planet. It's not really a super exciting scene but I'm happy with how it turned out nonetheless. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's another of my contributions to Magic's M15 core set. This was a bit of an odd one since rather than your typical fire wreathed meteorite hurtling towards doomed person/place/thing (I guess those <i>have </i>been a bit overdone), the art description called for something a little more comedic: </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">ART DESCRIPTION:<br />Setting: SHANDALAR<br />Color: Colorless artifact<br />Location: On a city street.<br />Action: Show an iridescent</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #e06666; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"> meteorite </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">about 10' across that has landed on someone who had previously been walking down the street. Maybe we can see the poor victim's legs under the still sizzling, smoking</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #e06666; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"> meteorite. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Kind of looking for that Wizard of Oz moment where the Wicked Witch of the East was crushed by the house.<br />If it adds to the scene, show some shocked and horrified onlookers.<br />Focus: The smoking, irridescent</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #e06666; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"> meteorite.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />Mood: Humorous - two pathetic looking legs/feet under a massive meteorite.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ok...not really what I envisioned Magic art to be (outside of Unhinged), but I thought it was funny and tried my best with it anyway. After playing with many different angles, we finally decided that a street-level angle with the unfortunate guy's legs sticking out towards the viewer was the best way to go. Here's the sketch:</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's a new painting that was just released for Magic's new core set, M15. I really enjoyed working on this piece as it was my first "human" I painted for Magic, and it was the first setting I worked on that was outside of the Theros realm. </span></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's what I got for an art description:</span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #f4cccc; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">SET ON ALARA<br />Color: Red Creature<br />Location: On a mountain peak on the plane of Jund - we can see the savage landscape, volcanoes, fissures, craggy mountains. Reddish, Turner-esque sky.<br />Action: A female human shaman stands among a clutch of dragon eggs. She holds one of the eggs, which is maybe a bit larger than her head. Her hands glow a bright red, looking like hot metal. Radiating from her hands are cracks in the egg. Perhaps the light from her hands illuminates the young dragon in the egg. The shaman is dressed in savage, Jund attire.<br />Focus: the shaman<br />Mood: my power can awaken dragons!<br />Notes: Jund humans have very slight reptilian touches. maybe she has 'alligator eyes'.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A female shaman with dragons eggs?! Sweet!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's a few thumbnails that I turned in to the AD from the description:</span><br />

<br /></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But needing to see the dragon in the egg a bit clearer, the AD requested a couple other options with the egg a little more pronounced. So I went back to the drawing board and did these:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was recently notified that my series of paintings for <i>Badru and the Beanstalk</i> has received a bronze medal from the 3x3 International Picture Book Show! I'm super excited about this because this project is something that I've been working hard on as part of my thesis for the past two years. Being my first real foray into the picture book market, I'm honored to have my work recognized amongst the thousands of entries that I'm sure 3x3 received from across the world. You can see a list of the other winners <a href="http://3x3mag.com/shows/picturebook-shows/pictureshowwinners" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many of you have seen one or two of the paintings I've done for this series before, but i've kept a wraps on the others because I wanted to wait until it was closer to my thesis show. But since that's only a month away now, here's the four illustrations that were awarded by 3x3:</span></div>

Also, I will be talking about the other half of my thesis which has not been shown yet. So stay tuned!</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><br />This guy was created as alternate promo art for the original Theros minotaur token. Apparently it's only been given out at special league events...So I've had a hard time tracking it down, and from what I've read, most of the players have also had a hard time finding them. So it's a rare card indeed! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had a great time painting this one as the art description basically said, "a badass minotaur running at the camera." Sounds good to me! I gotta thank Jeremy Jarvis for giving me the opportunity to create it. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's another set of guys I did for the game Rage of Bahamut last year. This character is based on the Norse god MÃmir who resides near a well of knowledge. All who drink from his well must leave a gift as payment for a sip from his drinking horn. In this version I wanted to have him also be sort of a forest spirit who is friends with all of the animals. As usual, I've enjoyed doing these various stages of a character. I've left out one of the stages here because I really don't like it....Can't always win.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today i'd like to talk a little about a new project that I've begun recently. </span><br />
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was contacted at the end of last year by <a href="http://www.llewellyn.com/" target="_blank">Llewellyn Worldwide</a> about illustrating a full tarot deck that was being written. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive about dedicating my time to completing 78 illustrations for the set, but the deadline was reasonable, so I agreed to do the project. In the past I have not been too familiar with how tarot decks work or what the cards mean, but I've always liked the imagery and format of them. I look forward learning a lot more about the cards as I work through and research for this deck. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After a few months of wrapping up illustrations for my MFA among other freelance jobs, I was finally able to get started on some illustrations for the tarot set. The Modern Spellcaster's Tarot is based on the standard <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rider-Waite_tarot_deck" target="_blank">Rider-Waite</a> deck, but is modernized with additional symbolism and imagery. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first two served more or less as samples to give the publisher and author an idea of my process and what the finished cards will look like. The two cards I was recommended to start with were Judgement and the Six of Swords, both being important cards in the set. The full meanings are a bit much for me to go into detail about here, but if you're interested you can read more about Judgement <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgement_(Tarot_card)" target="_blank">here</a> and the Six of Swords <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_of_Swords" target="_blank">here</a>.</span></div>
<div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> The author, Melanie Marquis, provided me with some great descriptions of what she was looking for in the images and I got to work. Here's the sketches with the original card designs from the Rider deck for comparison:<br />

Though I will say that incorporating the "Nyx," the stars you can see in the shadows of the cyclops, was a bit of a challenge to paint and have it read properly. Here's the card:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's a new illustration I did recently as a reaction piece for my trip to Pasadena back in November with the <a href="http://www.hartfordillustrationmfa.org/" target="_blank">Hartford MFA program</a>. After each trip we are required to create an illustration about something we experienced during our travels. I usually try to keep these paintings within the vein of my typical work, but I found it difficult to come up with something purely fantasy in the context of L.A. and it's surrounding area...No offense L.A., but you're just not home to axe wielding northmen or hordes of skeleton warriors (outside of the movie studios). </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So instead, I was inspired by our brief trip up to the Griffith Observatory. I thought it was a really cool place with great architecture and some awesome murals...that I could see through the doors. Sadly, we had gotten there just after closing. But I imagined what it would be like to be a kid who was visiting and getting to learn about space and look through the giant telescopes. So I created a little story in my head about a girl who visits the observatory and imagines herself becoming an astronaut...and her dog pal too...because, why not? <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hey folks, today I'm happy to share a "new" set that I did over a year ago for Cygames' card app game: Rage of Bahamut. As with the <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2013/04/skull-soldiers.html" target="_blank">Skull Soldiers</a> I posted last year, the idea is to take a given character and sort of evolve them over a series of four stages. It's always a fun challenge to take an already somewhat over-the-top character and push them further with each step. For this one we have a guy named Grendel...I'm not sure if he's supposed to be related to the Beowulf Grendel, but in any case they just said that he was a large beast man with an axe that lives in the forest and his "skin" is more like exposed muscle. So off I went:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I'm happy to announce that my painting "Badru and the Giant" was accepted in Spectrum volume 21!! <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm very excited today to share with you a new Magic: the Gathering card that was just released this past weekend. Unlike my last MtG related post about <a href="http://murphyillustration.blogspot.com/2014/01/my-first-magic-card-setessan-oathsworn.html" target="_blank">Setessan Oathsworn</a>, this card is actually the first I was ever commissioned for the game. Have a look:</span><br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This guy was created for a special encounter deck called Battle the Horde. Which is a special preset deck that players can play against to try and defeat the bloodthirsty minotaur clan. So, sadly this card can't be used in regular game play....i think? I don't quite know the the rules regarding this card, but I think it can only be used in conjunction with the horde deck.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyway, I'm really happy with this painting and it was a blast to create. Here's the sketch:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'd like to thank Dawn Murin the AD on this one for giving me my first opportunity to work on a game I've wanted to create art for ever since I saw it back in 1998. It's an honor to be a part of all the other outstanding artists working on the game. </span></div>
