I was doing thumbnails the other day for totally different project, and for some reason I was inspired to paint a space eagle. So I did this quick painting:

That's because over the weekend I found out that my first image (not first commissioned though!) for Magic: The Gathering was spoiled for the upcoming set Born of the Gods!
This is exciting because I have spent years trying to get work on this game which is known for it's top notch art and artists. On top of that, it's been almost a year since I first painted this image. So i've had to sit quietly waiting in anticipation for it to show up. Now gladly, I can share with everyone!
This had a fairly straightforward description which was to basically show this newly aligned satyr standing strong as a guardian of his new homeland.
Here's the sketch I turned in:

From there I went ahead with the final which turned out like this:
12"x16" Oil on masonite
And here's the way the card looks. I can't wait to get the physical artists proofs in the mail!
At long last, here's something I can actually share with everyone. This is a new sketch for a painting i'm working on called "The Ferryman of Hades." I'm creating the piece for an upcoming art book called Lands and Legends. I look forward to getting started painting on this one!
Here's a quick digital sketch I did for the Month of Fear blog. This week's challenge was to do an illustration for one of our favorite horror stories. I chose The Masque of the Red Death.

Hopefully i'll get a chance to do this as a real painting some time in the future as I like the image....but the way my schedule's been going lately...it might not be for a while.

I just saw that the recent Dungeon Magazine issue #217 has been released. Here's a painting I did for the article a couple months ago. The story helps give flavor to a Dungeons and Dragons scenario that takes place in the Undercellar. An interconnected network of dreary rooms below the city filled with all manner of nasty things. My task was to show a couple of wererats up to something....probably no good.
One of these days i'll have something for real to share, I promise!
But for now, here's a couple small paintings that I did for fun during a week-long class with CF Payne, and Gary Kelley a few weeks ago. The class was great for exploring techniques and various media. I had a chance to try out both Gary's monotype printing method (which I'll try to post on here at a later time), as well as Chris' crazy technique that involves a million different steps and mediums that somehow he can make look effortless. So here's my two little studies that more or less started using Chris' method as an elaborate underpainting, but more or less ended up as my usual oil painting style...I guess i'm stuck in my ways.

In other news, I'll have a booth at Gencon again this weekend in Indianapolis. I'm looking forward to the usual good time that is had there.
